A World Cup Round Up

Suffering from serious withdrawal symptoms and a big case of procrastination, I hereby bring forth to you guys, my round up on the FIFA World Cup 2006. I haven't wrote much about the world cup proper because I wanted to fully examine the outcome and all the players' performances before giving my take about it. Now would be a good time for me to share my take.

I'll start by talking about the winners.

Italy.

To be very honest, Italy arrived to the finals in a very dubious manner. It took a fiasco of a match between them and the USA to achieve a point, a very important point though. Then it took a controversial last minute penalty for them to arrive in the quarter finals. The quarter final match against Ukraine was not a very challenging one for them to arrive at the semi finals. The two last minute screamers against Germany were, well, screamers, as I've just said. Even the win against France was not display of their true flair, unless you consider massive diving and shoving and taunting to be of their true flair.

Granted, and to give them credit, their game play worked. They managed to stifle their opponents' creativity and stopped at all costs any goals from entering the post.

Some notable mentions:

Buffon
He carried away the Lev Yashin award as the best goalkeeper of the tournament and I'd say he deserved it. In all, he only let in two goals not counting the penalty shoot out of the final match, and one was an own goal while the other was an unstoppable penalty. But to deflect credit from him, he's lucky to have a good defence built around him and on the whole a superb team.

Francesco Totti
He's the flop of the Italian team. When I saw him playing his first match I was actually quite pleasantly surprised. He ditched his long mangle of locks for a short crop which looked very good on him, but that was about all I saw of him. he hardly touched the ball and was hardly even on the field making a contribution. Although he did make one notable contribution of converting the penalty against Australia, but after that he disappeared in the remaining matches again.

Luca Toni
I've never heard of him before. Maybe because I'm not very familar with the Serie A and it so happens that all of the Italian players play in the Serie A, a rather unique feat that only Saudi Arabia matched. He was great in the group stages but somehow managed to disappear along with Totti somewhere after that. Or maybe this is just the Italian way of playing, putting more emphasis on the defenders of the team. wahaha~ Anyway, I thought Luca Toni is a very nice sounding name. hehehe~

Runner Up: France

France started out bad, or perhaps bad would be an understatement. They started with two draws, about very bad as they can get. Considering France having their first team made mostly of the 1998 World Cup Champion team, and the same people being the fiasco of 2002, it's quite difficult to exactly say whether France is a strong team. Yes, they were on top of the world in 1998, but the same players became flop of the tournament in 2002 with much criticisms on them saying that they are old and tired and drained of creativity. Enter 2004, when all of them announced their retirement plans after the Euros. I guess they know they are old. But enter 2005 when the coach, after a series of lacksture performances and need a result had to persuade every one of those retired players to come out from retirement. We enter 2006 with 5 retired players all in the first team, and another couple of nearing 30s players.

Against all odds and against all criticisms, the French managed to squeeze their way to the final match. The only so called great matched played by France was against Spain, but I didn't watch that match because I was on a train at that time. I was pretty shocked because Spain is good, and the margin France won was considerably large, but other than that I cannot make any comments because I didn't watch the match.

There are a lot of notable mentions in the French team.

Barthez
I never really scrutinised him before even though I've watched him play back in those days. But he looked really short in this world cup, I don't know why. He hasn't really had any notable saves even though he didn't conceed a lot of goals.

Gallas
I'll only mention him because he's a Chelsea player. So far he has had a great tournament, but I don't like his attitude towards Chelsea. He has been saying that he wants to leave but Chelsea doesn't want him to leave, and after a great tournament, Chelsea will want all the good players we can get so that we can finally get that elusive European Champions Cup. Another thing of note, he's currently hogging the number 13 shirt in Chelsea which another player is coveting. I don't know how things will work out, so we'll have to wait and see.

Makelele
Another great tournament for our Chelsea lad.

Ribery
He's the only French who's not from the 1998 Champion team who managed to get on the scoresheet. Well, actually the thing about him that caught my attention was not his ball playing skills, but that birthmark on his face. I always thought that was sweat stains or worse bloodstains until I noticed that it was there even before he started playing. It's a bit irritating when I watch him play because my eyes would be drawn to those marks.

Henry
Before the tournament people were guessing would it be Ronaldo's year or Henry's year, but it turned out to be neither. A grand total of 3 goals in 7 matches is not a good record for a striker, lest a striker with the tag "one of the best strikers in the world". Anyway, one good thing that he didn't win the adidas Golden Shoe award is that he's endorsed by Nike, if I'm not wrong. As far as I know, he definitely doesn't wear adidas.

Notice I didn't mention a notable player? I'll talk about him later...

Third place: Germany

Germany is a real winner of the world cup. Germany as in the country not the national football team. But for this heading, I'll restrict myself to talk about the football team. They had a really really great tournament despite lots of talk before that they will flop. With every match they played, they gained load of confidence so useful to them. The opening match showed the world a new Germany, one with attacking powress. The match against Poland, against Argentina showed the world the traditional Germany once again, that they can grind results out of nothing and stifle the opponent until the final whistle. This is the new Germany, one which is able to mix modernity and tradition.

Losing to Italy was disappointing, but their bounce back match was amazing. It was also as if it were a tesimonial match being held. Klinsmann fielded non-regular players, giving them the opportunity to gain invaluable experience, but more amazingly, he gave the last honour to King Kahn. This is the depth of the German team no one noticed before the tournament.

Notable mentions:

Lehmann
Everyone who read this and this will know that I absofuckinglutely hate this player, but my opinion of him is getting better with every passing game he played. After the Argentina match, I had almost forgiven him. I once had a dream which I never told anyone about, maybe it's time to share it. It was perhaps in 2004 during the Euros, I dreamt of Lehmann. He came over to my house, asked for me, and I greeted him at the door. I was standing like right in front of him, not more than 30cm apart and he looked damn shuai. But of course, I tried to tell myself at that time that perhaps the person I dreamt of was not him at all (but of course it was). His eyes were red and he was sniffing a bit, not too much, just a little bit to show he was crying. He apologised to me, but I didn't accept his apology. Anyway, my opinion of him now is not that bad anymore.

I don't know if Lehmann would continue to play in the Euros or not. He's not very young already. He's the same age as Kahn, actually about 5-6 months younger only, but he's borned in the same year as Kahn. Now that Kahn has announced retirement, Lehmann should go. But if Lehmann were to go, Germany will have no world class goalkeepers at all, but if he still doesn't go, then Germany will have one really old goalkeeper in 2008. Problematic...

Friedrich
I thought he looked damn shuai.

Schweinsteiger
He's really an impressive young player although he missed out on the criteria for a young player by half a year. He has the determination to do well and to really make up disappointments, for that alone, he's a stronger player.

Ballack
I'd say he's one of the disappointing class of players along with Lampard, Gerrard, Ronaldinho and Shevchenko. Together they were said before the tournament to be the spark of their national team just as they held their club teams together, but collectively, they just weren't as good working with their national team as they had with their club teams. And Ballack, needing to impress his new employers and new fans didn't really achieve that. Not only that, the German team also played just as well without him, so whether he's really the soul of the team leaves much room for contestation.

Borowski
He's damn shuai. Damn damn shuai. I've noticed him playing for Werder Bremen and snce then I've already known that he's damn shuai, but seeing him in the world cup matches, I must reiterate my point over and over and over again that he is really damn damn shuai. He's tall, strong and handsome, with those old school floppy golden hair and wide boyish grin. Oh man... Even when he wasn't playing and was just sitting on the bench, he still looked so damn cute man.

Klinsmann
I never really liked him, until I saw him in that tight blue shirt with his sandy blond hair and cute expressions on the touchline of all the Germany matches. Then I noticed that that guy is really damn cute too. Maybe not as cute as Borowski, but still cute nonetheless. I ike his reactions to goals and misses~ hehehe...

Fourth place winner, and Yahoo! Poll's Most Entertaining Team:
Portugal

Entertaining would be a good word to describe Portugal. After all the entertainment I got from watching ridiculous players hitting opponents and getting hit by opponents in the Battle of Nuremburg, then watching brillant dives by the greatest actor in the world, a more credible actor than any Oscar winning actors, Portugal is indeed a very entertaining team to watch.

If you say Italy is the team of diving and getting penalty kicks, then you have not seen Portugal play. They not only blatantly dive, they also blatantly kick and beat and whack opponents. Statistically, Portugal is the team to beat in the number of cards they have altogether received in the whole tournament.

Notable players:

Usually if you notice, I'd start with the goalkeeper and then defenders then midfielders then strikers, but this player is so so notable that I must talk about him first. He stands as the Most Entertaining Player in the Tournament. In the group stages, watching him play is so entertaining as he selfishly keeps the ball to himself only to lose it to the defender, then in the knock out matches, we see him getting kicked and knocked and beaten up so badly that he even bled. And when he was taken down from the pitch, the tears came out, like any Oscar winning actor, how entertaining.

But that's not all, straight after, he bounced back from injury (which I bet was faked anyway) to send his club team mate off in the England match. To top that all, in his final two matches we see no less than three notable dives all of which you can get them off youtube, just type Ronaldo dive worldcup2006 or something like that. Alternatively, there's the ihateronaldo site.

Ricardo
Those penalties he saved against England weren't really his credit as they were England's, but he's still a good goalkeeper.

Costinha
Another entertaining player, if not violent. Twice suspended, he can still accumulate the most number of cards in the tournament.

Deco
Another player with many cards, but I don't thin Deco is of as much fault as his team mates. He's pretty much unlucky to be with such pathetic team mates that his fouls were mistaken for carded fouls.

Scolari
I don't know what's his tactics. I don't believe that he's the one instructing his team to dive and play act to win the world cup, but who can forget four years ago when a certain Rivaldo play acted to get another player sent off (or was it a yellow card)? At least after Ronaldo's second dive against Italy, he gave up protesting, and at least he didn't protested when playing against Germany. but then if he were halfway decent, he'd just have got that asshat of a diver off the pitch immediately.

Quarterfinalists

Argentina
A very strong team, but they were really unlucky to meet germany in the quarterfinals. I can't remember which match it was, but there was one match which Henize should have been ejected but didn't. Think that's the only grumble I have.

Brazil
So many big names, so high expectations, so pathetic a team. Before the tournament, people were talking that this would be the theatre for Ronaldinho to shine, but I hardly ever saw him playing. Match reports would say he was on the pitch, but I don't really remember watching him play at all. And he yielded a grand total of zero goals in total, so much for a much lauded player. His grand total of 1 assist, 4 shots on goal and 7 shots neligible too, especially for a playmaker. Kaka was not bad, but pity the team on the whole was a flop. Ronaldo with his 3 goals is still fat.

England
So many big names, so high expectations, so pathetic a team. Before the tournament, people were talking that this owuld be the theatre for Lampard to shine, having missed out in the 2002 games. With only 5 games, he topped the charts for most numbers of shots, and came in fourth in the most shots on goal only to be beaten by one and two goals from players who played in 7 matches. But his total goal tally remains as high as that of Ronaldinho. Gerrard, another flop of the games, so much talk about him and so little results from him. And we shall not even talk about Owen who disappeared totally after breaking his leg again. Rooney still can't keep his temper. Beckham easily becomes the best player on the pitch even though he's aging, well, he's the best because we're comparing him with his team mates here. Surprise package of England, Owen Hargreaves, the other Owen, the more impressive Owen, the best player in the England team if he played in his best position. Chelsea should buy him and put him as Makalele's understudy, Maka is getting old already.

Ukraine
Ukraine is the only country out of 32 to choose their base in a former East Germany town. The team trainer was an ex Soviet player and politically supports the Socialists back at him. Shevchenko's also another Socialist. A suprise package of the tournament. After being drubbed 4-0 by Spain, they managed to bounce back and go further than Spain went. But Shevchenko wasn't really shining.

Round of 16:

Australia was robbed. Kewell was another player who cut his hair.

Ecuador, not much an impression.

Ghana was good. They were robbed by the refree.

Mexico was also a decent team, tough to play, but not that all consistent.

Netherlands
They were unlucky to meet Portugal. In my very honest opinion, the Dutch-Portugal match should have been abandoned with all the players save Ricardo and van der Sar ejected. Dutch diver Robben was fined for diving, but really, his dives weren't as impressive as Ronaldo's. Okay, I've nothing against diving since everyone does that, but really, sending your own team mate off is bad. Saying you want to leave your club is the worst. Go eat shit. Shouldn't be talking about Ronaldo in the Dutch column. yea... Van der Sar was impressive, and I didn't noticed before, quite cute too~ van Basten's cute too~ hehehe...

Spain. Pity to lose to France, pity I didn't watch that match, but the other Spanish games proved Spain to be not that bad leh... suay? hai... But I like my Casillas being handed the captain's armband in place of Raul. Just like Terry wearing it after Beckham leaves, but sucks that when Neville was playing, Neville wore it instead. Speaking of captains, in the last Germany match which Balack didn't play, usually Schneider would wear the armband, but in honour of Kahn, kahn wore it instead. His last match, his last match as captain, but he'll still play for Bayern Munich for perhaps one more season ba...

Sweden was quite forgetable.

Switzerland was lucky they were drawn to an easy group. It easy as much that it's difficult. Erratic French, Unlucky South Korea, hehehe...

Group stages:

Angola, Costa Rica, Croatia, Iran, Paraguay, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Togo, Trinidad and Tobago, and Tunisia were all forgetable.

Ivory Coast was unlucky. They were about one of the best African teams, but this year is not a year of upsets, so they remained in the group stages and allowed the Europeans to shine.

Czech was unlucky. If Jan Stam wasn't injured, I think Czech would have went far. Quite an upset in this circumstance. But then again, they were drawn to a tough group to beat, so unlucky again.

Japan showed promise but just not enough. Oddly, in the game which Japan mustered their only point, they didn't score any goals while in the games in which Japan scored, they lost the matches.

Korea also showed great promise but lost out on the last round of matches.

USA was by far the worst team in the top seeds of the FIFA rankings. So much so for wanting to use American victory to promote the sport back at home. But then again, it's good to know that there is something the Americans are bad at~ hehehehe...

Personal honours:

adidas Golden Ball
It went to an adidas player, Zinedine Zidane.
He deserved it.
Even with the final headbutt. Theories are out there in the internet speculating about what was said to him. I strongly believe that Zidane was provoked. I'm also a person who cannot control my temper so I know how it feels to be provoked and if I were Zidane in that position, I'd do the same thing. No regrets. Granted, Zidane wasn't that impressive in the first two matches and got suspended for the next match, but in the end, he still shone and proved to the world that he isn't old despite what was said four years ago.

adidas Golden Shoe
Miroslav Klose
Ever since seeing him play four years ago, I know this guy is destined for big things. Just after being the top scorer in the Bundesliga, he's now the top scorer of the World Cup. This should now plug the mouths of detractors who laughed when they hear that he's my favourite player, not counting Chelsea players. Okay, even among the Chelsea lad, I'd put Klose straight after Terry and Lamps.

Really, I think he should dump those black adidas boots he wore for the games and wear some more sparkling golden boots like Zidane. lol~ It'd nice watching the player showcase their shoes on the field. My favourite shoe is still Robben's bright orange ones in which you can see it clearer than anything else on the field.

With the end of the World Cup, I guess now there's only to wait for the Community Shield, then we can start the premiership round of friendly internationals and then the Euros 2008 qualifiers and Champions League. So much to watch~

Postscript:
3453 words. I should have written my term paper on this man...
I'm reading someone's blog and that said person has a word count for every single blog entry, but personally, I don't find that word count very impressive at all. So what's it about 400+ words blog entries, or 1200+ words?

Goodbye My Lover

Goodbye My Lover

***

Goodbye My Lover by James Blunt

Did I disappoint you or let you down?
Should I be feeling guilty or let the judges frown?
'Cause I saw the end before we'd begun,
Yes I saw you were blinded and I knew I had won.
So I took what's mine by eternal right.
Took your soul out into the night.
It may be over but it won't stop there,
I am here for you if you'd only care.
You touched my heart you touched my soul.
You changed my life and all my goals.
And love is blind and that I knew when,
My heart was blinded by you.
I've kissed your lips and held your head.
Shared your dreams and shared your bed.
I know you well, I know your smell.
I've been addicted to you.

Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.

I am a dreamer but when I wake,
You can't break my spirit - it's my dreams you take.
And as you move on, remember me,
Remember us and all we used to be
I've seen you cry, I've seen you smile.
I've watched you sleeping for a while.
I'd be the father of your child.
I'd spend a lifetime with you.
I know your fears and you know mine.
We've had our doubts but now we're fine,
And I love you, I swear that's true.
I cannot live without you.

Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.

And I still hold your hand in mine.
In mine when I'm asleep.
And I will bear my soul in time,
When I'm kneeling at your feet.
Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.
I'm so hollow, baby, I'm so hollow.
I'm so, I'm so, I'm so hollow.

再见我的爱人 (Goodbye My Lover) by 苏慧伦 (Tarcy Su)

It started with Say Goodbye, Goodbye..., Jinwei introduced me the James Blunt song. On hearing the title, I first thought of the Tarcy Su song because I own that karaoke VCD and often sing it at home, and it's written by Zhang Zhengyue, so it's nice. I managed to find it on youtube to my big surprise. But also surprising, baidu doesn't have it. Then I thought of the more classic Teresa Teng one. My parents do play it in the car sometimes. Youtube doesn't have that by Teresa Teng, it has a cover version by someone else though. Then I remembered another song of the same title, the Power Station one. I think I have the burned CD of that album of the same title at home, not so sure. But because the hit song of that album was some other song, so I don't think many people would have heard of this before.

Maybe it's time to say goodbye, and seek a closure. And find a new horizon. But if I do, will I be accepted?

Weird Facts of the Day

I ish damn damn bored. So I ish went to Wikipedia to surf for fun. All it took was one word and lots of links and the night, and I'm now blessed with loads of useless facts that I didn't really need to know.

I started with Ronaldo because I wanted to know how many Ronaldos there are in the world, at least the famous ones. So I came to the disambiguation page. There wasn't anything there I didn't know, so I went on to look at the greatest actor of all time.

The greatest actor recently got his wiki page vandalised. hahahahaha~ Of course when I come to the page of a famous actor, I must go check up the page on acting.

Weird Fact of the Day 1
"During the 1998 World Cup, in the quarter-finals matchup between Argentina and the Netherlands, Ariel Ortega received a red card for headbutting Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, after van der Sar confronted Ortega on the his play-acting attempt to draw a penalty. Ortega had already been cautioned by the referee for diving. [3] [4]
A notorious incident of a player not caught simulating until after the match occurred during the Brazil - Turkey group stage match during the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Rivaldo was about to take a corner Hakan Ünsal of Turkey passed him back the ball, as Turkey wanted to hurry up the game. The ball softly hit Rivaldo on his legs but he collapsed dramatically holding his face and consequently Ünsal was sent off. Rivaldo was fined, but the sanctions were criticised as too lenient. [5]"

After this, I clicked Edwin van der Sar because I think he looks cute. He looks like the Vice Captain, but of course, van der Sar is captain, not vice captain.

And while at my fettish for goalkeepers, I went on to look at the List of Goalkeepers, but with so many names right in front of me, I headed straight for the shuaige I can see, Iker Casillas.

Weird Fact of the Day 2
"Because he did not have a driving licence, Casillas was the only Madrid player to use public transport to get to training sessions in the 1999/00 season.
He is currently dating Spanish model Eva Gonzalez. (2006)"

Remember what I said about Pavel Nedved? Well, there's another doll like footballer I like, Real Madrid's Guti, the player I like so much off the field but hate so much on the field. He sucks as a player, but he's damn shuai, just like a little china doll.

Weird Fact of the Day 3
Spanish youth academies are called canteras.
"Since 1912 Athletic Bilbao have employed a cantera policy. One of the main beneficiaries of the policy has been Spain. Athletic has provided numerous players for Spain, second only to Real Madrid."
"Numerous senior players have graduated through the ranks of FC Barcelona B. These have included Francisco José Carrasco, Ramón María Calderé, Guillermo Amor, Albert Ferrer, Josep Guardiola, Sergi, Víctor Valdés, and Andrés Iniesta." (I like Victor Valdes almost as much as Iker Casillas, two great young Spanish goalkeepers.)
"Many great home grown players have since passed through the ranks of Real Madrid Castilla, among them Emilio Butragueño, Manolo Sanchís, Martín Vazquéz, Míchel and Miguel Pardeza. More recent graduates have included Raúl Bravo, Guti and Íker Casillas. The club has also produced some notable managers including Vicente Del Bosque and Rafael Benítez." (And also both rose through the ranks to establish themselves as number 1 goalkeepers.)

Victor Valdes.

But I didn't linger there for long, I clicked back back and found a link to Raul. But there was nothing much, so I went to to the newly minted Real Madrid's trainer, Fabio Capello. But there wasn't anything new there either. So I went to Scudetto and took a look at the Serie A which provided me with the next fun fact.

Weird Fact of the Day 4
"The Serie A Championship title is often referred to as the Scudetto (small shield) because the winning team will bear a small coat of arms with the Italian tricolour on their uniform in the following season. The most successful league club is Juventus F.C. with 29 championships, followed by A.C. Milan (17), Internazionale (13) and Genoa C&FC (9). For every ten titles won, clubs are allowed to wear a golden star above their club badge; so Juventus has two stars, while Milan and Internazionale have one star each."

Cool~ I know the national teams get to wear those gold stars on their crests in the World Cup, but I didn't know the Italian Clubs got to do that too.

Then I went to Torino. Someone once said that Juventus is a team that is more popular abroad than locally. In the region of Turin, the more popular club was this, but I've never heard of this team before.

Weird Fact of the Day 5
"On May 4, 1949, after having secured their record fifth back-to-back Serie A title, and on their way home after a friendly match with Benfica in Lisbon, Portugal, the airplane carrying Grande Torino crashed against the Cathedral of Superga, on a hill near Turin, killing all the players and managers.
Grande Torino is still much loved by Italian football fans as a symbol of national pride that helped Italian people get through the hardships of post World War II."

A more normal fact, fun fact, Torino will be back to the Serie A next season, so we'll get to hear more of them, hopefully~

Next Italian team I took a look at was Inter Milan. And then next was AC Milan.

Weird Fact of the Day 6
The full name of AC Milan is "Associazione Calcio Milan".
"The club was founded in 1899 by Alfred Edwards, a British expatriate. In honour of its origins, the club has retained the English spelling of its city's name, instead of changing it to the Italian Milano; it should be noted that the current Italian pronunciation is actually MEE-lahn."

I never noticed that AC Milan was Milan instead of Milano which is the Italian name for Milan. Now I know, and now I know AC Milan has British roots, and note the pronounciation, MEE-lahn, not MAI-lahn, like some American wannabe would pronounciate it as.

Then I visited the San Siro, like what anybody would do after visiting the two Milano teams. But there was nothing much, so I went back, and noticed this very interesting thing called "retired numbers". One of the players who retired a number is Paolo Maldini. Actually he didn't retire his number, he...

Weird Fact of the Day 7
"Paolo Maldini has had AC Milan designate the number 3 for his son Christian who was born in 1996. Christian has already been signed for the AC Milan Youth Club."

wah lau... So young already so much weight placed on his shoulders. Anyway, while I was at Maldini's place, I visited his father, Cesare Maldini, but he wasn't a very interesting person, so I went back. And back. Before finding something more interesting to read.

Squad numbers. And I found this little bit of gem.

Weird Fact of the Day 8
"The typical numbering given above comes from the days when the 2-3-5 formation was used. With the convention of numbering from the back forwards and from right to left across each line the numbering is:
1. Goalkeeeper 2. Right full back (right back) 3. Left full back (left back) 4. Right half back (right half) 5. Centre half back (centre half) 6. Left half back (left half) 7. Outside right (right winger) 8. Inside right 9. Centre Forward 10. Inside left 11. Outside left (left winger)
Early evolutions of formations involved moving specific positions, e.g. moving the centre half back to become a defender rather than a half back. Their numbers went with them, hence central defenders wearing number 5. You can still see the effects of this system in operation. For example, in friendly and championship qualifying matches England, when playing the 4-4-2 formation, general number their players (using the standard right to left system of listing football teams) 4 defenders - 2,5,6,3; 4 midfielders - 7,4,8,11; 2 forwards - 9,10. "

No wonder. And I was wondering why Joe Cole was assigned to 11 when he's a midfielder. And why Gerrard was a 4 when he's also a midfielder. And why so many right wingers use the number 7.

Weird Fact of the Day 9
"Players were not compelled to wear the number 13 if they were superstitious. " (most notably, Ballack, but I don't think he's able to get that number at Chelsea cos Gallas is wearing it. Chelsea doesn't want Gallas to leave, but Gallas wants to leave, not this year, but he will leave next year when his contract ends. Wonder what number will Ballack get. Shevchenko has already got his favoured number 7. Oh well...)
"In 2003, FC Porto goalkeeper Vítor Baía became the first player to wear 99 in the final of a major European competition. Hicham Zerouali was allowed to wear the number 0 for Scottish Premier League club Aberdeen F.C. after the fans nicknamed him "Zero"."

Anyway, those people aren't that interesting, so I went to this number 14 person, Johan Cruijff, to get to know the legend a bit better.

Weird Fact of the Day 10
"Cruijff used to smoke 20 cigarettes a day prior to undergoing double heart bypass surgery in 1991, after which he quit smoking and began chain-sucking Chupa Chups lollipops instead. He also led the anti-smoking campaign developed by the Health Department of the Catalan government."

I went to the Chupa Chups page. We all like Chupa Chups, but how much we know about it? Yes, it's a high class lollipop, and we probably know that it's European, but I'll provide more weird facts about it!

Weird Fact of the Day 11
It's Spanish, Catalan, to be more precise.
"The Chupa Chups company was quite a success. Within five years his sweets were sold at 300,000 outlets. After the end of the Francisco Franco dictatorship (1939–1975), the self-funded private company went international. In the 1970s the colorful lollipops appeared in South East Asian nations like Singapore and Malaysia. In the 1980s it expanded to the European and American markets and in the 1990s to most Asian countries and Australian market. In 1995 a Chupa Chups lollipop was brought to the Mir space-station. As of 2003, 4 billion lollipops a year are sold to 150 countries with 2000 employees, 90 percent of abroad sales and a €500m turnover."
"The Chupa Chups logo was designed by the surrealist Salvador Dalí. "

So, amazingly, Chupa Chups came to Singapore and Malaysia before going European even though Spain is a European country. erm... Totally amazing. I really, totally didn't know that. Should we be proud of this? Hey! We've started eating Chupa Chups before you Europeans even though Spain's right beside you~ diaoz... And also, quite zai sia... Can find famous artist to design it's logo. hmm... How come no American brand find Andy Warhol to design their logos, although Warhol did painted lots of Campbell soups, but that's not because he was asked to. Speaking of Campbells, I'm so angry Germany doesn't have it. Sucks... I want soup!!!

Sidetracked a little, anyway, I went back to to Cruijff's page, then went on to KNVB because I wanted to know what those four letters stood for, it's Koninklijke Nederlandse Voetbalbond, by the way. There's nothing there, so I went to The Dutch National Football Team page.

Weird Fact of the Day 12
"The Netherlands national football team does not wear the colors of the Dutch flag of today, but instead plays in bright orange. Orange is the historic national color of the Netherlands, originating from the coat of arms of the Dutch founding father William of Orange-Nassau. The top (red) band of the current flag was originally orange. The current Dutch away shirt incorporates the flag colours as a diagonal stripe."
Orange Land.

Then I went to visit one of my favourite Dutch player. Dennis Bergkamp. But most of the stuff in his wiki page I've already read and know and nothing much for me to find out more. But I found this link interesting. Testimonial Match. We all know Roy Keane just had his, now come July 22 Bergkamp will hold his at the all new Emirates Stadium. I personally think naming the stadiums after sponsors is so disgusting, the stadium loses its identity.

Weird Fact of the Day 13
"The practice started in the days when players, even those at top professional clubs, were paid far less well than they are today. Few players were able to live on their club wages, much less save for retirement. The testimonial was a charitable gesture by the club; as testimonials were typically very well-attended matches, the practice of giving the players the proceeds from the match often enabled the honorees either to retire or establish themselves in another line of work once they finished playing. This is still the main object of testimonials in Australia and some other countries.
In recent years, testimonials have been less frequent, especially in the top levels of European professional football and other sports in which the top players are able to make enormous salaries, well into seven figures annually (whether expressed in United States dollars, euros, or pounds). Today's top-level players in popular sports often have far less need for the money from a testimonial than players from the past would have. "

I always thought testimonials were vanity events, I didn't know that there's a history behind it. Now it makes so much more sense because in the past retired players often struggled to get back into normal life. But I found that line "(whether expressed in United States dollars, euros, or pounds)" totally hilarious. yea... So true...

Speaking of Weird Facts, I've just realised something only today. The Coke bottles I've bought have German football stars printed on them, but only for the 500ml original Coke ones. I now have 5 bottles of those bearing 5 different players. I shall buy more, and buy the whole team! wahahaha~

And speaking of the World Cup, I'm so happy Lucas Poldoski won the young player award. I'm so happy out of pure spite. At least a football player won that award, not an actor. Ronaldo should be awarded an Oscar for all his theatrics sia...

Next up, the Golden Ball and Golden Shoe. I must emphasise, the adidas Golden Ball and adidas Golden Shoe award. I think, if all goes on as it should be, Miroslav Klose should win it because because I don't think an Italian defence would allow Henry anything more than a goal. Even with one goal, Henry still would trail Klose. The Golden Shoe, I think would be the cap to the end of Zinedine Zidane's playing career. Although I personally think Klose should win, but then I'm just being biased. hehehe~

Finally my dear Klose is making a big name for himself. But I do not wish to see Chelsea to buy him then place him on the bench. Klose plays better in a 4-4-2 formation, or with another striker, so Chelsea won't fit him well, and I do not want him on the bench. This World Cup has been a pretty mediocre World Cup with no one really shining like a superstar. Maybe Zidane, but then hor... Remember four years ago, people were saying that Zidane is old. Now he's four years older than before, how come nobody's saying he's old and tired. With this I rest my case that the failure of the French team in 2002 is not due to old age and tiring old players but due to their own incapabilities to perform. See how the oldies are shining four years older? wahahaha~

Unveiling the FIFA MasterCard 2006 All Stars Team:
Goalkeepers: Gianluigi Buffon (Italy), Jens Lehmann (Germany), Ricardo (Portugal).
Defenders: Roberto Ayala (Argentina), John Terry (England), Lilian Thuram (France), Philipp Lahm (Germany), Fabio Cannavaro (Italy), Gianluca Zambrotta (Italy), Ricardo Carvalho (Portugal).
Midfielders: Ze Roberto (Brazil), Patrick Vieira (France), Zinedine Zidane (France), Michael Ballack (Germany), Andrea Pirlo (Italy), Gennaro Gattuso (Italy), Luis Figo (Portugal), Maniche (Portugal).
Strikers: Hernan Crespo (Argentina), Thierry Henry (France), Miroslav Klose (Germany), Francesco Totti (Italy), Luca Toni (Italy).

Only one Englishman, but it's Terry!!! I really think he'll be the next captain, at least I hope so~ Anyway, Chelsea has four representatives in that team. lalalalala~ Chelsea all the way~ This World Cup tournament is becoming a Chelsea showcase, with the exception of some benchwarmers and the misfiring of the person who tops the number of shots taken, Chelsea players has been shining. I like!

Looking forward to the last two matches. I want Germany to beat the actor flat and square. Then for the Sunday's match, I would prefer France to win although most Germans hate France. I want France to win because I don't want Italy to win. Italy shouldn't even be in the quarter finals anyway, after the round of 16 match with Australia, that's a howler man... kanasai...

Take Germany to win 2-0, Ronaldo to get carded, Klose to score a goal and make an assist for Poldoski to score a goal.
Take France to win 1-0 penalty or draw 1-1 with Italy losing the penalty shootouts. I'd go for Zidane to get that French goal.

*cross fingers*

Say Goodbye, Goodbye...

I wanted to post this yesterday night but I couldn't find the lyrics to the song I wanted to post, so I postponed it.

Yesterday morning, I woke up woth a song stuck on my head, I kept singing the above two lines, "say goodbye... 现在就离开 放下我的不忍你的爱 goodbye...", so the whole day, I set my music player in my N70 to this song one repeat mode. Perhaps because the night before I went to sleep in tears, I don't know why, but I was in tears. Some nights I just can't fall asleep before I have a good cry, maybe not a big cry, but just let all the tears and frustrations out. It's very difficult to say goodbye. I've been trying. Coming all the way to Germany and forcing myself to say goodbye is one method, but now that the end of my almost like a dream trip, I fear that when I go back to Singapore, I'd say hello again. And the cycle of hurt and pain will continue again.

Maybe sort of like a sense of deja vu, or that there's a bond between me and my friends, I came home yesterday to read this in a friend's blog.

Just as her other Chinese blog post moved me to tears, this did not disappoint either. Maybe because I see myself in such a position too. I've been trying to tell myself I'm stupid, I've been letting people tell me I'm stupid, but in the end, I'm not really stupid, I'm just consoling myself by deeming myself as stupid.

hai...

I shall not sink into depressed mode today, so I shall continue with my narrations rather than rants. So, that night I badly wanted the lyrics to the song that kept playing in my head. I headed first to BaiDu. I mean, those Chinese really have piracy brought up to this level, where else can I go? But to my surprise, Baidu didn't have the lyrics. I tried google and yahoo seaches, neither yielded results. I ended up in some places which touted to provide that lyrics, but they turned out to be farce links.

I turned to my resident provider, and he too did nothing to help.

Then I proposed the last resort measure. Which isn't really that desperate a measure if I were at home back in Singapore where everything is within my reach. You see, that song is not a very popular song. Unless you are a fan, you'd probably never heard of it. But I have the song. Because I bought the CD. I think this might be incomprehensible to some people, but I do own that CD, so I have the lyrics book, but back at home.

I'm a nice person, and it was late at night in Singapore, so I didn't want to bother my provider and force him to be my errand boy and do paiseh stuff.

But just as I was thinking of when I can email or SMS my sister to get her online to do me the favour and copy the lyrics from the booklet for me, she turned up online tonight. It might not be unusual to those people who are online 24/7 but my sister is under the control of the emperor and dowager at home, and internet access is limited to their permission, and she hasn't been online for more than a week already. But I was pleasantly surprised to see her online tonight. It seems like more than a coincidence.

The lazy sister scaned the lyrics booklet for me and sent it to me. I typed it out.

Techno Love

Say goodbye

Goodbye

The title is damn cheesy. There's nothing techno about the love song if you read the lyrics, but just because that song's genre is techno gives it the title Techno.Love, yes, with that period in there. It's so turn of the century. Granted I like the lyrics. Li Yuhuan wrote the song himself, the lyrics and the composition and he probably arranged it himself. He's by profession a music arranger and producer having done songs for like Faith Yang, Mavis Fan and other Taiwanese experimental singers.

Feel like making a music video out of this song.

I don't know if this will end up as yet another of Joan's impulse decisions anot, but I really am interested in making music videos after a couple of attempts at AMV making. I like video editing, it's fun. But the thing about anime is that I don't have many clips to begin with, so often the result isn't as I'd like it to be. And the answer to this problem is for me to film these clips myself. But I can't do everything alone. I right now have already myself, one actress and one handyman. I need an actor before I can make plans. Hopefully I can find one, and hopefully this is not just one of my another rash impulsive cravings.

Anyway, this is the most recent AMV I've uploaded on Youtube. I've uploaded it sometime ago, but never found the correct time to put it up here, but thought that that video has something to do with my topic today.

The Other Guy

"a detective conan amv, but more like a fanfic though. an amv with 1920s shanghainese movie styled captions to complete the content of the amv to make it seem more like a piece of fanfic, with moving images.

involved characters include hattori heiji, kudo shinichi and toyama kazuha.

song used is unfaithful by rihanna.

it's still dedicated to jinwei."
- from my video description in youtube

I'm now making another AMV also for Detective Conan, but have been procrastinating due to my deadlines. After that I want to really use film and video a music video. I've a couple of songs that sound suitable to use, but well, I need the actors, and also need to make sure that I don't lose steam before I can complete it. bah~

It'd be nice if one day I can too put my stories into film. But we'll see...

Creepy Night

The Past Will Return to Haunt, Especially at Night

A friend had a near experience with the third kind, so we started chatting about it. Okay, not we, but I brought up a couple of questions. Just wanted to think of how a normal person would react to a situation like this. I've always been wondering... Because I have a fair deal of my own unfinished business, so I've always been thinking that if one day I really were to die an unnatural death, I'd come back to haunt my past just as it had haunted me when I was alive.

Yea... I think if I died, I'd go look for that friend to help me complete my unfinished business, after all, I don't have that many friends who can really help me in my unfinished business, or rather most would not even know what's going on. I won't visit my family, maybe I might, but I don't think I'd show myself to them. It's like me coming over to Germany, yes, I miss home, but I don't really want to see my family that badly. After all, the whole world can forget you but not your family. I know even if I am away for twenty, thirty years, and when I return, my family will still remember me, and will still welcome me back to their arms. I am always their family. But it's not the same for friends. You will forget them, you will make new friends and forget the old, after all there are no obligatory ties for you to remember them.

Today's not a very good day for me. And the next couple of days, I'm predicting myself to be very emo. And on top of all of that, I'm procrastinating doing my homework. I'm basically just damn screwed. And I haven't planned my timetable yet. Needing to do three GEMs and the GEM module page is not out yet, I'm damn pissed. hai...

I miss Singapore. I miss the people back at home. I miss...

Singen and Triberg

Singen and Triberg.

Singen.

This was where we went after Konstanz. Singen was because there was a rather large train station where there were connecting trains to quite a lot of places while Triberg was because previously we'd met another family who was going there. They said that there was the largest Cuckoo clock in the world, so we decided to put that place into out itinery.

I don't think I'll blog much about it since both places have their beauty yet also disappointments. For one, the going of there itself was a huge mistake, another, the partner was bad. On top of all these, the lack of sleep really didn't do me too well. And I'm not really in a very good state to blog now. hai... Just had an emotional breakdown last night, lack of sleep, piling homework, and a long good talk with someone in attempt to clear up some of my emo-ness. I think I didn't thank you, must thank you properly. Okie, thank you said~ It's cute to see how some people feel paiseh when you thank them. lol~

First up, the picture tour. The pictures log a progressive tour I took, follow them in the visual tour~
singen

1. Singen.
2. The view that greeted me as I stepped into the town of Singen. Pretty disappointing, but it was a Sunday morning, so I guess it was very sleepy ba...
3. Any town would look instantly nicer with a couple of sculptures around, I guess.

8. The scene which made us excited about Singen.
9. A closer look at that scene.

But we didn't stay in Singen for long. There wasn't really anything much there, so we made our way to Triberg. After all, to us Singen was for transit~ lol...

Triberg.

Triberg literally meant three mountains or something to that effect, so definitely that place was filled with mountains and of course, that sitting pretty smack in the centre of the blackforest, there's lots and lots of greenery. It made a good photo taking place, but sad to say, my camera isn't a very professional one, so without the wide lens zoom and pan focusing. The pictures turned out pretty simple, yes simple and pretty, but not really amazing. lol~

The mountains and greenery~

I like the way the rails and the road look like a valley amid the lush green hills. It also looks as though the rail goes all the way down to infinity. I like these sort of disappearing roads and rails pictures. The road will go on and on and on... A bit depressing to think about, but hai...

Guess which is the real clock?

Highlight to read the answer.
The one on the left is the fake one, just a simple decoration. The one on the right is supposedly the world's biggest cuckoo clock. It looks damn disappointing. I was imagining to be in a hall with a huge gigantic clock, but it turned out that the clock was outside. It looked more like a house. For like 3 or 5 euros you can go into the clock and see the mechanism of it. erm... I prefer aesthetics to technicalities.
lol~

It took us a long while to get to that cuckoo clock place. The sign near the train station said it was 1km away, but after walking for something seemingly 1km of distance, we saw another sign saying that that place was 1km away. And after than 1km, we came to the outside entrance, we still needed to walk for another seemingly 1km of distance to get to the top of the hill inland to see that damn big clock.

And another thing not very convenient of this town is that the Altstadt (town centre) was far away from the train station, the sign said 5km, but I think it's more. There's supposedly a very beautiful waterfall at the other side of the centre, but we didn't have the time or energy to get till there. yea... not only was the walk far and though, it was raining. sucks... I hate rain. We just managed to grab a nice warm lunch at a little hotel restaurant and went back that long foot journey back to the train station.

I like water, river, streams, fountains, and all things of water, I guess most people should know after seeing all my pictures, I never give up a chance taking photos of these. I like rapids too~

During secondary school geography, we learnt all about landforms and stuff, but well, all those are just theory. It didn't occur to me the beauty of the rapids until I saw them with my own eyes. I think right now, the only thing I can think of that's prettier than a rapid is a waterfall. I love water~ After all I am a pisces mah~ And my chinese name, all bearing the element of water, all three characters. hehehe~

IMG_7794
The road won't go on, but the path will.

Now wait patiently for the benelux tours. Think that will be more fun, but more work for me. So much to write about, so many photos to sort, and so much photoshopping to do. gah~

The Vice Captain

Addendum: It's three years instead of the four I wrote. I didn't realise this until I was counting the years. This story took place in 2003.
(yay~ I'm not as old as I was worrying about yesterday. It pretty much freaked me out to realise that I'm fours years older than before, luckily, I'm only three years older~ diaoz...)

This is a fictional story based on a somewhat exaggerated true account. The exaggerated accounts were told to me with first hand experiences, from no less than three different people. Gathering these three exaggerated accounts, adding in my own exaggerations, plus the actions and the romanticism of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2006, me having watched 36 out of the 60 matches, and will be watching the four remaining matches, I shall now let my fingers dance over the keyboard.

I was quite surprised that on that evening straight after that event, almost immediately, the three souces separately called me up or SMS-ed me relating to me their accounts of what happened before. Of course, they are my friends, thinking that I might have wanted to be updated on almost every of his actions. In the end, I had one of my sources send in an anonymous SMS to the central character. I never admitted that it was me with the anoymous SMS, even though a couple of months later, I did send some other SMS using my own phone, with my number, and stating that I'm Joan, but that's something else.

Back to the story. Actually I wanted to post up another entry before this, but Flickr is not working on me, so I can't put up the pictures. If you might have noticed, I don't know who might have though, that there was briefly, for about an hour only, a half completed entry posted up. I accidentally pressed the publish post. Then I took it down because I wasn't able to complete the entry no thanks to Flickr. I did save it, so wait for Flickr to work on me and I'll complete the rest, but for now, a totally no pictures post. Well, actually, I don't know if it's Flickr's problem or my connection problem. Either way, enjoy the story.

And if you find the story familiar, drop me a comment telling me how far my story deviates from your memory of it. It has been four years already... omg...

The Vice Captain

The boys walked off the glistering football field after 45 minutes of agony. The other team had managed to keep them from scoring. Although they did managed, too, to keep the other team from scoring, things was just not going right for them.

They were the Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United of the Junior College football teams all rolled into one, and it was a well known fact that these boys had a higher calibre than most S-League teams. Their opponents were a lesser team, not very well known, and definitely not that top school that they were. And they were still not winning. What was going wrong?

The burden of winning the game fell squarely on the team's striker, the vice captain, the Face of the Year winner, the guy everyone in school instantly recognised. He needed a strike. He needed to win the game for the team. He needed to retain the school's pride. He needed to fulfill everyone's expectation. Out in the stands were thousands of his schoolmates and teachers and even the principal, all shouting the school's name in glory, and his name in motivation. The burden was just too much for him to shoulder.

He walked over to the team captain and exchanged a couple of words. The team's teacher in charge came in to give a prep talk to the boys. All was not lost yet. There was still hope, after all, this was a David and a Goliath, the Champions against the minnows. The problem was however that, David won Goliath. He must prevent that from happening. Must. And they had 45 more minutes to achieve that goal, or more goals, it wasn't actually that difficult a task.

Half time ended. The boys took to the field again. The game continued.

The second half of the game went no better than the first. He found it difficult to create an opening out of the other team's defences, his pace was always checked by his marker, perhaps the other team had already done their research and knew that this was their man they had to mark tightly no matter what happened. And the other team was right.

In the middle of the second half, the teacher in charge signalled to the referee that he wanted to male a substitution. Was it tactical? Was it because of injury? For what reason was the change made, no one knew, and probably never to know. All that we know was that the change was made.

The team captain was taken down. As the team captain walked over the pitch to pass the captain's armband over to the vice captain, he felt the burden sadled on him grow increasingly heavier. Now it was left to him to marshall the team to retain the title of the national champions of the A division.

As we all know, Junior College only takes away two years of our time. It is so short a time that regrets cannot be overturned with the prospects of a "we can do it again next year" mentality. The seniors will graduate, another batch of students will come in, but before that, they needed to ensure that the seniors were able to graduate and leave the club in glory. And let them for the last time to don the school colours.

The vice captain was a senior too. There was no next year for him. Next year would see him lying the the mud in a jungle serving his National Service. This was probably the last year he would be able to compete in a football competition, a nationwide one, in fact. And after emerging victorious (with pun intended, insider's pun), the last hurdle left for them to once again lift that cup and bring it back to their school.

Just as the vice captain saw the captain taking a seat on the bench in the stands, the striker from the other team tore apart his team defences and headed straight for the goal. Thankfully, it hit the post. But this called on for the team captain not to slacken.

Mustering all his concentration, all his determination, and all the motivation he could, he rallied the team to defend well and prevent the other team from scoring. But still after many tries, he still could not find the back of the net. It ended down to himself.

It seemed to him that it was his problem. He was missing strikes, his goal was not strong enough for the goalkeeper to miss, he was just not winning the game for his team. It was all his fault, or was it not?

As the clocked slowly ticked down. The final blow came to him. A midfielder from the other team once again broke free from his markers and shot a neat pass to the striker lurking near the post. With the striker so well-positioned, there wasn't a high chance that it would miss. And it didn't.

1-0, to the minnows.

He got more frustrated. And as he got more frustrated, he lost his concentration. He shots were now not even troubling the goalkeeper, because it always ended up on the stands. The schoolmates cheering from the stands became silent. The teacher's face was grim. The captain was almost in tears. The vice captain too was near to breaking down. Slowly it became clear that this year just wasn't their year. Even with all the good players, they just weren't able to do their best.

The final whistle came. The final verdict. Loss. Dejected, depressed, disappointed, and all other de-words possible, the boys headed towards the locker rooms. Teams were on their faces, mixed with grime and dirt and sweat.

Boys do cry.

***

I wonder how many people remember the events of the national finals four years ago? I wasn't there, of course, I wasn't in the schools involved. I think school rivalries are comparable with the club rivalries you see in European leagues, not S League, S League is totally pathetic. School rivalries are almost as intense as national rivalries, especially among the top schools who have been competing against each other for years.

I grew up in a primary school hating the other school across the street. The stereotype of the students in the other schools still sticks and made me swear never ever to send my children to that school. I grew up in a secondary school which had some not as intese but still some bickering with other top Chinese co-ed schools in the area. My junior college was not that happening, but due to another competition that I was involved in, I came to hate this other college. This goes on. Especially in the bigger schools, just like especially among the bigger clubs.

Anyway, I'm now thinking of my topic for my term paper. I'm deciding between Sport and Nationalisms or the Commercialisation of Sports. And my sports would predominantly be able football since we are so close to lifting the cup at this stage.

Ah well, I feel so drained. I'm wondering if I should file this story under my Prozac Nation or not. I've been writing only about relationships up till this point, and my Prozac Nation is mainly about that. Hai... Will have to file this somewhere, do is there really a need to? hmm...

Visiting adidas in Herzogenaurach

The actual travel log will be up much much later, this is just a photolog to show people that YOU HAVE SEEN IT HERE FIRST!!!

Places visited in Herzogenaurach:
- museum featuring sneakers culture
- adidas headquarters
- adidas centre
- adidas factory outlet

I feel like an adidas groupie now, but anyway, hope you guys will like what you see here, all from the sleepy little town of Herzogenaurach. And remember, you've first seen these pictures here, taken by Joan Ang.

IMG_8598
Teamgeist welcoming all people into the town of Herzogenaurach.

That big rotating ball was sitting right smack at the entrance into the town in the middle of the traffic circle.

There's another of those big rotating Teamgeists at the bottom of that huge gigantic Argentina banner.

Herzogenaurach played host to the Argentine football team. Actually, it's not really the town which played host, unlike other hosting towns, it's adidas who played host. The Argentina team was like staying in the adidas hotel, training at the adidas sports training facilities. The press conferences were conducted by adidas. yea... I heard it when I went over to the adidas centre at the outskirts of the town. I went there by accident but more about that another time.

Though adidas might have wanted Argentina to win, but I guess adidas is much much happier than Germany won the match. lol~

With the match details except the competing teams.
But then again, nobody would be able to play with such a huge ball.

Another big big ball.
This was outside the adidas Factory Outlet at the outskirts of the town.

Now we go take a preview in the Museum featuring adidas and Puma. To those who don't know, Puma is also a German brand, in fact, it's a brand also from Herzogenaurach. It's founder is Rudolf Dassler, the brother of Adolf (Adi) Dassler, the founder of adidas. This reminds me the story once told by Prof Murfett. After the war, the Americans decided to break up German dominance of the chemical industry, so it decided to divide the biggest chemical company of Germany into four smaller chemical plants. Of these four chemical plants, in about twenty years, three of them formed the biggest four chemical plants in the world. The breaking up of the bigger original company resulted in greater efficency and drive to succeed.

This must be something German, to see the breaking up of the Gebrüder Schule Fabrik into adidas and Puma resulting in them at one stage in time garnering 80% of the sportswear market. Even until now, they are the leading sportswear manufacture in the world minus America.

Sidetrack a little bit, America is such an outcast lor. With the whole world other than itself totally glued to the World Cup, I really can't understand why it's still so disinterested to that sport. bah~

Anyway, on to my preview of the museum.

Actually I'm not that interested in Pele or Puma, just thought you might want to see it. I said I'm an adidas groupie!!!

There are more to see and more to hear from me when I finally get down to blogging about my travel logs, but in the meantime enjoy these pictures~ And enjoy the World Cup~ I was just counting, I've altogether watched 36 out of 60 matches already played, though I've only watched them on TV, but it's good enough~ And of course, I'll definitely watch the remaining 4 matches, all of them!

The Height of Human Stupidity

or should I just say, IGNORANCE?

In a forum a trawl frequently, this person said this to me:
"Joan, maybe the jersey's quailty in Germany is better."

I whinced in disgust and distaste and all the dis- words came out. How on earth can there be a person so ignorant? How on earth can a guy, 26 years of age (if I'm not wrong), working adult, say something so naive? Even my secondary school younger sister probably knows everything about the workings of international companies in the age of the 21st century.

Let's put it this way, the Big Mac Theory, other than that showing purchasing power parity, it is chosen because EVERY BIG MAC IN THE WORLD IS ABSOLUTELY THE SAME. Similarly, every adidas product you can buy in a retail store is absolutely the same. They all are churned out from factories in China. That is unless you are David Beckham, Riquelme, Zinedine Zidane, Oliver Kahn, Kaka, Arjen Robben, Steven Gerrard, Michael Ballack, you won't get shoes made in Herzogenaurach anymore.

I still feel like strangling him. I can't believe he's so stupid.

Okay, I'm feeling so mean, that I shall now start to personal attack him. And some of the stupid guys in the forum.

There's this forum thread which discusses about love life, and the guys in the thread are all pathetic, including the above mentioned guy. They moan about not being able to find the girl who would love them but talk nothing about finding a girl they would love. They moan about there are no more nice girls on earth but forget that the nice girls take no interest in them. All these just provides evidence that they will never get a nice girl, or rather a nice and smart one.

A quote from the above mentioned loser:
"Girls only wants guys money! Girls only go for looks! Not love. There's no more love anymore. Girls are heartless! Sorry if I'm too harsh. So far, I haven't bump into any nice, sweet girls who wants pure love. Well, so sad & so ashame. This world has changed into something really shity. No wonder there's so many guys turning AJ. Dun believe? I can intro some AJ friends, who was played and dumped by girls before. Haiz.... Disappointing..."

My reply, but with his name censored:
"(censored), instead of saying you "haven't bump into any nice, sweet girls who wants pure love", why not say that you haven't bumped into any nice, sweet girls who would love you purely. don't blame the girls, blame yourself cos there are definitely girls out there who are nice and sweet and wants pure love, though not from you."

I'd dig up more loser-ish posts from him if I'd the time, but for the moment, after ranting here, I think I'm sort of pacified.

Really, I wonder if he had got the hint the last time we went out that I DO NOT WANT TO GO OUT WITH HIM EVER AGAIN. If he really did not get the hint, after me pulling another guy down to meet him for dinner, I think he can be banished to the loser cupboard for the rest of his life. I think I'm too nice a person already, should have snubbed him in the face, but well, I am nice, so I've to put up with losers. wahaha~ And the stupid thing is that he's not the only one.

No wonder I never feel like chatting on MSN with people, other than those usual mates whom I chat with. bah~

The Mavis Hee Saga

I first read something about it on someone's blog, but that person never stated much, not even what happened, just that something happened. Using the wonders of the internet, I googled and found an article in English about it. But it was a very short article with no details at all, and of course, no comments about it. Then I remembered I've a friend interning with Shinmin. You know you are old when you have friends across industries.

I asked for details, and I've received the Shinmin articles.

Call Me God!

(Suntec
City),

One reason why I'm so interested about her is that I really liked her. I even have an autographed CD at home. My impression of her when I met her was that she was damn skinny, damn damn skinny. Now to think about that, I think she might be depressed. I can't think of any reason that might make her do something so out of the line other than losing control of the mental self.

Really, I wish her all the best.

hai... On a personal level, I'm quite frightened. Oh well... If I've made a choice, and I want to stick to it, I'll have to bear the consequences, and not look back. No regrets, never.

Good luck, Mavis! I wish you happy. I think that's all one need...
