A Day With the Chinese Drama People

I'm still putting this link up here...
http://nusartsclub.org/blogfest/
Please, if you can visit that and cast a vote for me. Thank you!

Now into the main point in today's agenda. I won't be talking much today, I'm completely burnt out, so I'll let the photos do the talking. But before I get the photos in, one point regarding my previous entry. The daddie was just telling me as I headed to school yesterday, that carbon monoxide is colourless and odourless, so carbon monoxide poisoning is an almost unpainful and effective way to die. No struggle cos it's undetectable by the human nose. Most people aren't afraid of death, but are afraid of the pain they have to suffer just before they die, so I think dying by carbon monoxide poisoning seems to be the best way to die.

Okay, yesterday we held the annual general meeting for one of my ECAs, NUS Chinese Drama. Time has come for the current committee to pass on to the next committee. It's time for me to retire. So, yesterday, we had Audrey to give a brief talk in what to expect from the next committee, and we gave out nomination slips to attract the members to run for committee.

Unlike other ECAs where there are always many people running for a couple of posts, we lacked the membership and hence we lacked the able people who can be committee members, and this whole elections thingie, kinda is a big headache for us. Nonetheless, with a round of sabo-ing, I guess things would turn out okay ba... We've also cut down the number of posts from 8 to 5, so hopefully we can at least come up with just 5 able people. Able and committed people, I hope.

First up, a camwhore picture.
I found this pot of fake roses at the lobby of the CFA building, thought it would make a great picture if I put my head beside it.

The current renovated CFA building is absolutely interesting, it is not card access only most of the time. I tried it out for the first time, I couldn't get my card to work properly no thanks to my poor common sense and this kind girl from CO I think came to help me to work my card. It was pretty funny that she wanted to help me get my card to work rather than to merely open the door for me like what most lazy unquestioning people like me would do.

18032006124
A picture with Jinwei.

I couldn't resist using Jinwei's handphone to take a couple of pictures of myself. I don't know why by I think I look nicer in his handphone camera. lol~ I took three pictures of my big head in three different angles.

No photoshopping, no nothing other than Jinwei's handphone and my big head. Which picture do you think nicer reflects my big face leh?

Okay, now for a live interview with our members regarding our elections for next CFA year.

It's conducted mainly in Chinese, to as far as my Chinese can handle it.

After the brief AGM, we headed down to Munchie Monkey for lunch. Before that we had thought of maybe odering food back, or something else, but when we have Munchie so near by, hehehe...

More live footage from Joan

Still in Chinese, and this is of a lousier quality because I used the second camera of my handphone instead of the main camera.

But anyway, I've photos to share, so it's okay...
18032006130
This was everyone there at the lunch, except for Jinwei who was helming the camera. And stupid guy, take photo take until so blur. *bish bish*

The camwhore obviously just had to take another photo. Can't remember who took it for me, but I think I look cute can liao le.

These are what I ate. As from the video just now, it's Zhichun qing chi fan. Not exactly Zhichun but it's the group as the whole who foot the bill, from our group funds, so quite cool~ We'd just ate and ate~

This Italian Chocolate Cake is my current favourite dessert. *yum yum*

After lunch, Jinwei me and Jinsen decided to go catch a movie, but Jinsen had a short project group meeting, so we waiting for him with Zhichun and Zhixia who had ushering duty later that evening. We retreated to the student lounge and continued camwhoring.

Notice we are all in the same shirt? So cool~

Jinwei, Jinsen and I went to watch V for Vendetta. A decent show to watch, very political, very thought provoking, yet very exciting. I loved it. I love Hugo Weaving. Don't think I'd be doing a review on it, too tired liao... See how ba...

死罪能免,活罪难逃

I'll be doing an oral presentation on Joseph Goebbels in German and part of my reseach brought me to this intricate subject of suicide, especially in the case of foreign leaders.

I know some people might disagree with me, but what I think is that fallen leaders should commit suicide upon hearing all is lost. After the fall of Germany, Hitler commited suicide, all his aides commited suicide too. Even some who were hauled up to the Nuremberg Trials commited suicide before they were sentenced to death. To me, it's a matter of sticking to what you deeply believe in. In committing suicide, it also means that you are preserving yourself to the ideology you firmly believe in.

In an event of losing the war, the leader loses everything. He loses his land, his people, what he believed in, and even his basis reason for living on this earth. He has lost everything that is meaningful to his existence, so why isn't he allowed to die? Goebbel's wife put it very nicely in her last statement,
"Die Welt, die nach dem Führer und dem Nationalsozialismus kommt, ist nicht mehr wert, darin zu leben, und deshalb habe ich auch die Kinder mitgenommen, denn sie sind zu schade für das nach uns kommende Leben, und ein gnädiger Gott wird mich verstehen, wenn ich ihnen selbst die Erlösung geben werde ... "
and I believe in that.

Not only that, a dead person generates more talk than a person alive. If Hitler had not commited suicide and left alive who would remember him? He'd grow old and finally slide out of people's memories and when he dies, nobody would take much notice of him. But by commiting suicide, people remember him, maybe as a dictator who led to the war, or as anything, just so long that he was still remembered by people. It's like artists' paintings, the value rises once they're dead. So I started reading up on suicide.

I started with Wikipedia. I opened up the category for suicide and went through every single article listed in the category. I read the list of suicides and came to a conclusion that suicide can be a very powerful tool. Yes, you might argue in dying, nothing is left, but people can make use of this as a last ditch attempt to achieve something.

With that I thought of the old Chinese saying of which I styled my title upon. 死罪能免,活罪难逃. It means literally, death sentence can be waivered but not the physical punishment for the living. In effect, it is used by the Chinese when meaning that they can be spared from the death penalty but they still have to take blame for their actions and suffer punishment while they are alive. But I'd like to give another meaning to this old adage.

The dead can be freed from whatever sufferrings and punishment, but those alive must take the blame for the dead.

Once one is dead, there is nothing more one can do. I know some religious people are going to argue about the sinnings and stuff and what death is not the end of anything, but logically speaking, once you die, you cease to exist in any physical form, you cannot feel, you cannot do anything, and therefore freed from all sufferrings. But those alive have to take the blame for your leaving. Think in the context of a father with heaps of debts and loansharks chasing him. He thinks that by dying he can be freed from all his debts, of course he can, but other people have to bear the consequences of his death. Think about his wife and his children, though he might have died, but they are still alive and they need to eat and they need money, how are they going to survive on their own now. And not to mention the mental and emotional anguish they have to go through in a single parent family and what other people might think of them. The father's debts won't be cleared by his death either, there is still the garrantor who needs to settle his debt on his behalf.

I wrote about regrets some time ago, and I said that the worst regrets are those of which they cannot be overturned, like in circumstances of death. I thought, can death be used as a tool to either transfer sufferings onto someone else, or to put the blame or put guilt on somebody for the rest of their lives.

Currently, I'm tackling a full length novel on the life of a young single father after the suicide of the mother of his daughter. I suddenly thought, could she have killed herself because she wanted that guilt to be in him for the rest of his life. And for him to remember her, and his mistake for the rest of his life. And to emotionally scar him for the rest of his life.

I thought about the following scene I'd write about. I don't know if I can fit this story into any of my short story collections, but I'm going to at least draft things out here first, the raw idea of my imagination and exploration of this subject. I shall name them, something not ver characteristic of me. The names will be the names I'll be using in my full length novel, but they are not the same characters. I'll just borrow the name, like how Wong Kar Wai borrows the use of the names of the characters and 2046 in In the Mood For Love.

The following story is one out of my imagination and bears no resemblence to anyone alive or dead, any similiarities are pure coincidences. And this is also not a reflection of anyone, especially not myself, so plese do not misunderstand.

The Revenge

Scarlet brought a knife with her on her last expedition to Ming's house. She wanted to end everything once and for all, and she wanted Ming to pay back for all the time and youth she had lost on him.

Scarlet knew where Ming lived. She had been stalking him for quite some time, since he tried to break up with her. Once in a while, Scarlet would stalk Ming's wife instead. Shan, Scarlet knew all about her. In the early days when Scarlet and Ming were together, Ming had already talked to her about Shan. They had even met on two brief occasions which Scarlet had staged. Once she appeared in front of Ming and Shan while they were shopping for groceries and introduced herself to Shan as Ming's friend. The other time she identified herself to Shan while she 'coincidentally' met her near Shan's office.

But Scarlet had mixed feelings about Shan. She hated her definitely because she was the love of Ming, but she also pitied her of her ignorance to the two timing nature of Ming. Some nights Ming would appear lonely and sad in front of Scarlet, and she'd pity Shan for not knowing that her husband was such a weak person who need conforting yet didn't dare tell her. Scarlet always thought that even though Ming might be two timing her, at least she knew who was he two timing her on, and at least that that person was his wife. But Shan knew nothing. As a women, Scarlet's heart did went out for Shan.

But as Ming's love for Shan grew stronger and more resolved, he wanted to end all ties he had with Scarlet, Scarlet's jealousy grew stronger. It wiped out whatever remnants of sympathy she had for Shan. She just wanted Shan out of the way so that she could have Ming all to herself.

That was not possible as she slowly came to know. After stalking Ming and Shan for some time, Scarlet realised that nothing was able to change the love Ming had for Shan.

So she thought of another idea as revenge. She knew Ming rather well, after being together on and off for about five years. It's amazing how his wife never suspected anything after they were togehter for this long a period. Scarlet knew that despite Ming's ill treatment and lack of love for her, Ming was very apologetic to her. He knew that Scarlet had sacrificed a lot for Ming, and yet he was unable to repay her with anything. Scarlet planned to make use of Ming's soft spot for her and make him pay it with his life.

Consumed with thoughts of revenge and jealousy, Scarlet remembered the old Chinese saying "死太便宜他了" and sought to think of a revenge that would make him pay for life with his regret.

Nestling the knife in her passenger car seat, the seat where Ming would sit on if he were in her car, she drove over to his house. She felt as though it was the old days, when she would drive over to his house and pick him up to go somewhere for a night out.

She was never officially been invited into Ming's house before, but she had been stalking the house since she found out where he lived. Some afternoons when she knew Ming was out and Shan was at home, she'd drive by the house and peek into the windows to catch a glimsp of Shan if she were lucky. This time, she brought her knife with her and walked up the stairs. It was 18 stories up, but she didn't take the lift. She didn't know why she did that either. Maybe she was hoping that the energy she spent on walking up the stairs was able to sooth the burning desire for revenge inside her. But it was no use, she still wanted to make lives for Ming and Shan as miserable as possible.

She finally reached Ming's doorstep. Ming wasn't at home. She knew that. She knew that this time he would be at work, she had noticed his car was not in the carpark too, so she just peeked into the house for a sight of Shan. She seemed to be cooking in the kitchen.

Shan, cooking for her husband. Ming, coming home to eat the home-cooked meal made by Shan, was simply too much for Scarlet to take it.

With the knife, she slit her finger. With the bloodied finger, Scarlet wrote something on the landing in front of Ming's house.

"To Shan, I am your husband's mistress. Are you surprised? I know you played no part in anything done by your husband, maybe I'll be forgiving and not blame you for my plight, but I really cannot bring myself to forgive Ming."

The finger Scarlet had slit had dried up, so she took her knife and made more slits onto her other fingers, and continued.

"To Ming, I hate you. I blame you for this mess I am in right now. And you should take blame for it too. Look closely over railings, see? That piece of work is crafted by you, no one else but you. After I am gone, please continue to remember me, remember the girl who loves you more than anyone else, and who will continue to love you even till death. Goodbye. I love you, as much as I hate you."

With her bloodied fingers, Scarlet tooked out her handphone and made one last call over to Ming.

"Hello, Ming?"

"What do you want?"

"I'm outside your house. I can see Shan cooking. I think I'll knock on her door after I hang up this phonecall. Maybe you'd like to rush home and attempt to explain our relationship to her?"

"What the fuck do you want? Don't you dare disturb Shan, I warn you."

Scarlet walked over to the door and knocked a couple of times clearly, allowing the sound to penetrate through the phone.

"Yes? Who's it?" came the voice from inside. Scarlet allowed that to make it's way through the receiver of the phone.

As the door opened, "Yes?" came Shan's voice. Scarlet turned away from the door and hurdled herself over the railing. "Come home now, Ming." was the last Ming heard from Scarlet before a loud thud. In the background, Ming seemed to have heard a very familiar loud scream.

That was enough for Ming to immediately rush out of his office and back home.

Maybe I'll do a follow up on this, maybe I'll leave it as such. I'm feeling a bit tramatised by my own writings. Another irrelevant thing I'm thinking of, should Scarlet's name be spelt as such or should I name her Scarlett instead? Actually, my original name for her is Adele, but somehow I think the Scarlett of Scarlett Flight sounds nicer. hmm...

Body Shopping

Imagine one day receiving a mail that looks like this, what would you first think of?
16032006113p

My first thought was that Body Shop sent me a couple of flyers introducing some new product. I receive tons of those product advertisements periodically in my email, and I receive SMSes informing me of promotions and discounts every now and then, so nothing's wrong with the mail. With my debit card statement (which I don't bother opening to find out to my utter horror the amount of money I spend every month), I tossed my letters onto the couch and plunked down absorbed in my television show.

Then during the advertisements, I decided that maybe I should open up that letter since it felt pretty thick. Maybe there were great deals, like 20% discounts, or some really interesting new product coming in?

The first thing I saw that came out in the letter was this card.
16032006114

It was too wordy for me to take it after a day of German classes, so I merely scanned through it... Picking out a couple of key words it said that my current Body Shop membership is expiring. I thought it must be something asking me to renew my card or something. Then I went on further... Then it said that they were giving me a new card, free. I thought huh? were they that hard up? Then it said that I NOW AM ENTITLED TO 15% DISCOUNT WITH MY CARD! Oh my God... Then I squinted, it said that I am now a Star Loyalty Member. Because I spent more than $450 in a year. erm... Did I really spend that much?

Bah~ But I don't care. What matters most is my new card.
16032006115

Look at the Star Loyalty in bold~
16032006117p
I know it's a little blur, okay little is an understatement, I know it's very blur, but that's the best you can get out of a handphone camera at this hour of the night.

Look at it compared to the old card, with nothing written under my name and above my IC number~
16032006118p

And better still, enclosed in the little envelope included these discount coupons. 30% discounts~
16032006119

After I got that membership, every personal care item I needed was from Body Shop ever since. Currently, I'm using Body Shop's facial wash, body wash, face exfoliater, make up (my entire make up collection is from Body Shop, including foundation two kinds, conceallor also two kinds, eyeshadow a lot of kinds, blusher, lip balm also many kinds, loose power, and not to mention my full brush set, and travel brush kit, and fragrances). I have face mask, nose pore mask, body mask, spa treatments and god knows what other weird stuff from Body Shop too. I still have two not yet used shower gel too, in peach and rose.

Not only do I spend loads on myself. In all, over the past year, almost every birthday gift, Christmas present, gift exchange, whatever present, I get them from Body Shop, thereby spending a lucridous amount over there.

As a Body Shop member, we get this card. So much I can use to pamper myself before I finally take off. You know, one of the first things I did when I was in Freiburg last June was make sure I know my way to get to that Body Shop branch. I guess come summer I'll spend lots of time there even though I dont get any discounts with my card outside Singapore.

I first flirted with the Body Shop membership last year. I remember that day pretty clearly. It was just when they started selling memberships, and I happened to want to purchase something (I can't remember what) after dinner in middle February. I was persuaded by the salegirl to buy that membership. I cost $10, with 10% discount with every purchase, and I was entitled to that discount immediately. I calculated, I just needed to spend more than $100 to earn back what I saved by buying the membership, not to mention that there were also lots of freebies thrown into the membership too. By signing up, I got a free gift. With every certain amount of spending, I get more free gifts. And there's also lots of member discounts and promotions offered too. I thought, it's a pretty good deal.

16032006120
With every $30 purchase we get a stamp, every three stamps entitles the member to either a free gift of a discount, except for the last $25 discount, four stamps are needed.

In one year of my membership I accumulated 20 stamps. I completed one card of 16 stamps and started a new card and have 4 stamps in that new card. When you calculate in that each stamp is worthed $30, altogether I had spent *gasp* a grand total of more than $600, bearing in mind that if I spend $46, I still only get one stamp. Oh my God! I must be mad.

But seriously thinking, consider my make up set and my fragrance set and not to mention my full brush set, that would have set me back by like $400 already, so what's more with a couple of facial wash and body washes and gifts and presents and what nots. hmm... I think I'm just trying to make myself feel less guilty over my spendings.

Unleashed aka Danny the Dog

Unleashed aka Danny the Dog

unleashed-intro

I bought the DVD some time back, watched it then and wanted to write about it but never found the time to do so, finally I think, today is the right time to discuss about this film in greater detail. Maybe because while I was backing up my archives, I read through some of my old entries. My writings seemed to have detoriated over time, probably due to my massive mood swings and me being over indulging in my own problems. It's time for me to find back the old Joan and just be herself all over again.

Btw, if you are free, can drop by http://nusartsclub.org/blogfest/and drop me a vote, or if you think I'm worthy of a vote. Thanks!

There are two titles to this film Unleashed and Danny the Dog, hence I think over somewhere, some ingenious person gave it the moniker Unleashed aka Danny the Dog, I thought this sounded more apt. The Unleashed would be that Jet Li's character's development, the theme of the film, of unleashing him. Danny the Dog is just his name in the film and his status, not very apt since the theme of the film was about him trying not to be a dog anymore.

This is a Jet Li film if no one knows this. I say Jet Li because it boasts the signature fighting scenes but I'd like to emphasise this as a film rather than his film. This can be said as one of Jet Li's more dramatic, more cinematic film.

I came to know about this film while surfing through the biblical website for film junkies aka IMDb. I think I was browsing through some forum regarding Jet Li when I came across someone somewhere stating that one of his favourite Jet Li's films would be Unleashed. This got me interested because I've never heard of this film before. So I checked it up. IMDb said that it was a 2005 film, I was pretty shocked because I never heard of this film before. Naturally I thought that it was a not yet released film (that was about at the end of 2005), but after asking around a couple of film junkies (or should I be more specific and call ourselves art house junkies?) that I realised that this was not as new a film I thought it was. It's run ended. I started to watch out for the DVD.

I didn't really give myself a reason to buy the DVD until that day when I went to watch Brokeback Mountain that I decided to buy a couple of DVDs to watch and kill time. I had watched that film the day after, so I don't know why it took me this long to do a write up on this.

The plot of this film is simple, yet thought provoking. The story tells of Danny (Jet Li's character naturally), a man who was as a child brought up like a dog to be a fighting machine. His master uses a collar to control to, once the collar is removed, Danny is supposed to fight to kill all of the opponents of his master. He lives in a cage, eats with his hands, has little life other than a teddy bear and a picture book. He does what's he's told. Life can be said as simple. Although his master treats him as a dog, sometimes when he's in a good mood he can treat Danny rather well too, sort of like how you treat a guard dog, it has its uses, sometimes when it behaves well you'd be pleased, sometimes when it doesn't get things done well, you'll get upset with it.

But one day, Danny got separated from his master and got to know this blind piano tuner and his step daughter. In them, Danny realises that he is not a dog, nor is he anyone's fighting machine or servant. With them, he searches for his self worth. But of course, like in any movie, good times do not last, and Danny has to come to terms with the very basis of who he is and how did he come to be like this.

I like this genre of films, themes that revolve around exploring of human nature, primate basic human nature. A bit like my almost all time favourite film, Blue Lagoon.

Really, can anyone be brought up as a dog, any human to be a dog? Or should I ask the question, what differentiates a human from a dog? And if there's a difference, how can a human be brought up to be as loyal as a dog, and as fearless? The film doesn't explain this clearly, but from young, that was what was propogated into Danny. I think what separates human from primate is their ability to think for themselves, but much of what we think are what was taught to us, in a way I still think what happened to Danny is plausible. But as we see in Danny, after he leaves his master, he was able to think for himself and start to discover his self-worth, that he is not a dog after all but a human.

Humans are really no different from primates when pushed to extremities. If I can argue that then this film would be an anti-thesis of the above statement. Danny grew up under streme conditions, and the relieving of himself of these extreme conditions was what that made him to think of himself as a human once again.

Jet Li as Danny is actually quite good. He was able to portray the primal Danny and also the innocent in worldly affairs Danny, at times he was like a dog, yet other times he was like a little boy. I think his youthful boyish face did helped him get into character quite a bit. The fighting scenes were not bad, not too over the top, yet quite characteristically Jet Li.

Morgan Freeman acted as the blind piano tuner. I don't really like that character because he seems very one sided, like a totally good guy like that, but his acting, as always was good, very fatherly. The step daughter was cute, some little hints here and there, but generally, they seem like too nice a group of people.

But I like the character of the master, Burt. I think he had this wholesome image. At times he might seem cold hearted and treats Danny and his other men like dogs, but some other times there were slight gestures that Burt isn't really ill treating Danny, and even says things like "I love you" and "You're so good", really like treating Danny as a dog. Then I thought, is it right to treat a human like a dog? I know this is a moral judgement and there is no right wrong answer to it. Maybe it's the means of which Burt acquired Danny that I think it's wrong of him to treat Danny as a dog. No spoilers here though... hehehe~

I cannot imagine myself being raised like a dog, but for an idea to have a person almost doglike to wait on you loyally, hmm... Humans with their overcomplicated brains often think too much to give anyone unquestioned loyalty. In a way, can we think of government propaganda as a form of raising our children to become dogs of the nation? With the instilling of mindsets and ideologies into our minds... hai... Quite a depressing thought.

A downside of this film that that there is not enough exploration of Danny's childlike innocence and his struggle between his innocence and his dog-trained loyalty.

The film shows that Danny was trained since the age of 4, but I thought the child in the film looked a lot older than 4. In IMDb forums, the posters gave his age as 10. Theories are that even though he has physically aged, his mental age still remains at 10 years. Maybe 10 years, and with his subconscious mind, and with that major spoiler I'm not revealling, Danny did wanted more than anything to leave Burt. But for me, I like to be in my comfort zone. I think that if I were Danny, I'd probably not want to leave him. It would be good if the film explored this area a bit more thoroughly.

Some other criticism of this film is that it is set in Dublin. erm... There is technically nothing wrong with a film being set in Dublin, but then none of the characters actually speak with an Irish accent, so this is a bit of a problem. In fact, if I hadn't read in the plot synopsis that it was set in Dublin, I wouldn't have known that it was set in Dublin. Almost everyone spoke with an American accent, except Jet Li that is, and that the piano tuner and his step daughter had mentioned that their hometown is New York, which makes things a bit weirder, travelling two thousand miles over to Dublin for what reason?

Still, this a refreshing film, different from the normal Hollywood fare, partly because this is an international project film, part of it it French, and the French always make very interesting and watchable films.

7.5 I'd say.

Regrets, a Lunchtime Musing

I brought my mother and my sister out for lunch yesterday afternoon. Though it was meant to be lunch, we ate at about 4pm in the afternoon, a very Joan timing.

At first, I had only thought of bringing my sister out to eat having just received my tuition fees, and I thought that my parents would be out like they always are every weekend, but it turned out that my dad was out of town, leaving the three of us at home. So I decided to pull the mother out too. We went down to Holland Village to have Crystal Jade Lamian Xiaolongbao.

It's not very often I can bring my mum out like this for lunch, in fact I think it has really been a very long time since I treated my mum well. Then I started thinking, if my mum were to die, what regrets would I have? *touch wood* I know this sounds pretty morbid, but it's pretty true. I often think of such of myself too, if I were to die tomorrow morning in a car accident, what regrets would I have? We all have some kind of regrets, some small, some big, some we can make it back, some gone forever.

My little regrets are often regarding money, overspending, buying that piece of dress that looks horrible on me, and me never wearing it, or sometimes, not buying that piece of clothing, and when I turned back to get it, its last piece was sold. I remember that there was this red windbreaker from adidas which I liked but didn't have the chance to buy it before it was recalled, also a regret. But these regrets can be atoned. I was given another piece of red windbreaker, also from adidas for my birthday. I gave away that horrible dress so I won't be seeing it ever again, unless it's on someone else.

Going into bigger regrets, I have some which I lost time over, rather than money. I lost time, and precious youth over some stuff which I never liked mentioning to anybody. If you happen to know what is it, then fine, if you don't don't ask me anything about it. I have absolutely no wish to face with that any more, I want it out of my life, and hopefully I can forget about it all.

Most of my regrets are about friends, and friendships. I have lost friends because of misunderstandings, and to me every of that is a regret. I have also lost friends because losing contact, and me procrastinating trying to get back into contact with them, a regret that I have only myself to blame. I remember from my kindergarden, there was this Eurasian girl I was pretty close with, but I have no clue to where she is now. In fact, I never properly graduated from my kindergarden. Every student before leaving would have a picture taken by that school but I never had one, because my leaving was pretty sudden.

Then there was my primary school, Nan Hua Primary, the friends I've lost contact there because of my transferring schools. I never got a chance to properly say goodbye to all my friends because I left also pretty suddenly. It was during the school holidays when I received the notification, then I just disappeared after school started.

Times in Tao Nan also left much regret. Regrets of my behaviour towards some people, regrets of some friends whom I've made, regrets about not studying and many more.

Then in Secondary school and in JC, there were also friends made and friends lost, all because of us not making an effort to try and keep in contact. Some are because there is a lack of fate. We've found other friends, and saw no more need of old friends, or that we prioritise our friends differently. Even until present day, some of these regrets still persist under different circumstances. Add in misunderstandings and misgivings, friends gain friends lost, everything comes a full circle. But with regret.

I treasure people a lot, and hence I place great importance in friendship and human relationships. To lose a friend is something ranked highest in my not to do list, but sometimes I also can't help but to lose friends. I once wrote about it somewhere buried deep in my archives that I had this friend. I tried calling him up, sending him letters (I know it sounds very old school) but all to no avail, he wasn't keen on keeping contact, and after a while, I just gave up. It's difficult, but I don't want to appear too desperate. At least to me, I know I had made an effort. I still regret, but at least I regret with a clear conscience.

There are also some friendships that somehow got tangled in a web od misunderstandings and misgivings. I still don't know how to solve that out. Most of the time, I'm the nice person, I'd apologise and treat it as nothing happened. People who know me know that I'm frank and direct, I say things to close friends without thinking and they shouldn't really take notice of the crap I usually say. But sometimes, I'm too short tempered and would get myself into quarrels frequently not everybody know that I mean no harm, and hence, not everybody is able to take it, and hence, I lose friends who have yet to know me well. That would be my fault and my regret.

But there are also cases of misunderstanding that isn't my fault. I feel indignant and misunderstood, and all those negative feelings I hate the most. I nurse grudges, I'm vengeful, but I also am regretfully. Sometimes I might regret myself, sometimes I'd put the regret on others. Like I often tell myself, that I regret giving so and so a tight slap before I left, before we parted, before what and what. A bit negative of a feeling, but a regret nonetheless.

Some regrets are regrets that are stuck for life. When a person dies, the regrets you have associated with that person will stick onto you for life. Coupled with that I'm the biggest procrastinator on earth, I know I'll just end up with the biggest regret one day.

My biggest regret now, is already a regret that will stick onto me for life, I just need to add up a couple more of those, wait for a couple more deaths, and soon I'll be a person with nothing but regret.

When she was alive I told her many times I wanted to learn how to make agar agar, the special brown kind which she makes. I wanted to learn how to cook braised eggs which even my mother still hasn't got it perfected. I wanted to learn how to cook the yellow noodle with fishballs. But I only knew how to say I want. I never made an effort to find the time to learn. I procrastinated and gave myself a whole lot of excuses. She was young and healthy then. How was I to know that all it takes was a few months, 8-10 only for her to be contracted with illness, struck deep with virus and just going off like that. A year ago she was in the pinkest of health.

Because of that reason, I went on a retreat the last holidays to stay with my grandfather, even though we hardly communicate, at least I get to spend some time with him. I now try to make time for mahjong with my other grandmother, and time with my family, the whole extended family. Even my cousin, we make time to go out often with each other, though it's usually hard on our purses since we are so bad influences on each other.

I don't know anyone knows this or not, but this is the first time I'm writing this down on black and white. I'm estranged from one of my aunt. I don't talk to her, in fact I totally ignore her, to me she just doesn't exist. When she attempts to talk to me, I never reply, in fact I totally disregard her presence. When I look at her, I look through her, like there's nobody in front of me. I don't regret our strained relationship, but I regret taking things to drastic to this step.

Sometimes I wonder, if ghosts are present because they have unfinished business, when I die in a car accident tomorrow morning, will I become a ghost.

I think I will.

I went that place to eat after visiting the longest sausage.

But I'm feeling pretty tired of blogging now... bah~ I shall put up some pictures, and if I feel good, I might talk about it later, if not, then just admire the food. And me, nonetheless.

These are what we ate...

11032006045
The bread platter, I forgot to take pictures before eating, so the bread looks eaten. hehehe~

11032006046
Asparagus salad
We were suffering from asparagus withdrawal after not being able to get any of those kind in Singapore, you know, those fat white asparagus we ate in Germany. But sadly, this asparagus tasted different from what we ate over there. hmm...

11032006047
Traditional pasta with asparagus and cheese
The other girls never ate this sort of pasta before. And I didn't realise until much later that I remember that I actually had eaten this kind of pasta when I was in Freiburg. It was in soup made my Najib's host. I remembered that she said that it was unique to southern Germany, so I guess that was why the others didn't had it. Then I remembered another thing about it. It's made from leftoverflour pieces. hehehe~

11032006048
Chicken with mushroom sauce
This was Cindy's favourite. I loved it too~

11032006061
King prawns with vegetable linguini
Surprisingly, the linguini was not bad. Prawns as prawns always are, was great.

11032006062
Sausages, on top of Sauerkraut
I love sausages, have I said that before? lol~

11032006063
Mash potato, I think it came with the sausages, but it looks good enough to eat on its own.

11032006052
Beer!!!
Me and Jane had it, the other girls only had sips. bah~

11032006075
Tiramisu
This angle isn't really that well taken, I can assure you that this tasted nicer that it looks in this picture, and there was more than it looks in this picture.

11032006076
Apple strudel with one scoop of vanilla icecream

We ate Chinese style in a Western restaurant. We ordered all these food and shared it like how you'd eat a Chinese meal, ordering dishes and sharing everything. This is one of those I think you can call it ancient Chinese philosophy. Rather than eating your own portion, and eating a lot of the same thing, why not eat different variety of stuff and try out a lot more stuff than you can handle on your own.

I think this is what you can call as tasting varieties. Man are curious creatures, always in search for something new, and this applies to eating also. Sometimes there are some people who are very steadfast and prefer to eat a lot of the same thing. For me, I'd prefer to eat a lot of the same thing, but I get sick of the same thing after eating really a lot of it, then I'd look for something new and eat a lot of that too, until I get sick of it.

Variety is good for me only when everything is things I like.

The interior of Paulaner's also pretty interesting...

The microbrewery thingie~

A pole thingie that looks like a flatenned Christmas tree~
The most interesting thing of the interior, the toilets...
1103200604111032006042
hmm... Why does the woman looks fatter than the man? Why does the man looks taller than the woman? damn... This is gender stereotyping~ bleahz...

And with the beautiful interior, the camwhore in Joan emerges again...
11032006035
With Jane and Cindy, I don't have a group photo, must get from the other girls...

11032006040
I couldn't resist those cute looking signboards above~

11032006082
A pseudo-mood picture
I think I look pretty dao in it, it doesn't portray my beautiful eyes, and this angle makes my face quite flat, but I like the bluish tinge to the picture, although my arm looks a bit awkward. bah~

Yup~ It's nice getting to know the other girls too~ Jane, Geokwei and Xiangqin...

Longest Sausage

I don't know if I should rally my blog for the blogfest thingie over here
http://nusartsclub.org/blogfest/
because everyone I know who wants to vote for me are unable to do so. In the end, I decided to just forget all about it. lol~

Anyway, after not doing anything other than typing long long parchments of writing, I shall make it up with long long parchments of photos. I shall spilt them up for easy reference and more apt titling.

The Longest Sausage
Saturday 11.3.2006 Chinatown

I met Cindy at Chinatown MRT station, she was supposed to be there with her other friends but I couldn't locate them and Cindy was late. *bish bish* Luckily I had my new handphone with 1gig of memory space inside of it 359mb of mp3 songs I'd had uploaded the night before.

The making of the long sausage was at the Chinatown square, and Cindy'd friends were there already. While walking over, we saw this sign~
11032006003
We laughed at it because it was in Chinese, advertising for something German. Or maybe we were laughing because we were crazy.

Before I went over to have a look at the sausage I'd imagined the longest sausage to be the biggest sausage, you know, long and fat, sort of like a gigantic bolster. A humongous sausage which is proportionate to a normal sausage. Like a huge ham before it is sliced.

Upon reaching Chinatown square, we heard German singing. I got very excited although I couldn't make out a single word of what they were singing. Bad sign. After two years of learning, I still couldn't make out the singing of a song? After the afternoon before of watching an entire three hour long movie Der Untergang in German with German subtitles, I still couldn't make out the singing of a song? This is very bad. How am I going to live through the following three months in a German land?

11032006004
The only thing that bothered me was the large number of old people in the area. But it's Chinatown, so I guess that would be normal.

The longest sausage was made for charity purposes. Proceeds from the selling of portions of the sausage would be donated wholly to charity.
11032006005

So we went to take a look at the sausage.

11032006006
Me was totally disappointed.

Where is my gigantic bolster of sausage? It turned out to be more like a winding rope rather than a humongous sausage. It was long, I don't know exactly how long it was, but winding around the sausage was a long long measuring tape measuring the length of the sausage.

11032006008
I couldn't resist camwhoring using my new handphone camera along with my 1gig card though it only had about 641mb of space left after me putting the 90 mp3 songs inside.

11032006009
Also cannot resisting taking a photo of me and the sausage. You know, like evidence that I was there, you cannot say that I wasn't there and that somebody else took the pictures instead, and I only added some of my big heads inside somewhere or another. I also made sure to capture the vast number of young chefs there (though I suspect that they are not very qualified people), and the sea of old people waiting to eat the sausages.

I is so so excited. I is so so hungry for sausage.

Then I was disappointed for the second time. I thought there was going to be like a gigantic grill to grill the longest sausage, but it turn out not be so. The longest sausage was an uncooked sausage. To grill the sausage, the master cut it up to small pieces to grill on the small grill. And that was the end of the longest sausage. sad~

But anyway, me want to eat the sausage.

11032006019
The cut up sausages waiting for me to eat them... Damn... I see them so cut up after once being so long, I so damn sim tia lor.

11032006017
The master cutting up our sausage.

Cindy's friends did an interview with that master for their German project. So fun~ I also want to interview somebody, but everyone involved with my project theme are all dead. damn... Why did we choose to do Goebbels arh, Cindy?

11032006016
All the different sauces for the sausage

11032006018
Sauerkraut

I don't know is it that the town I was in was different, but I never had the chance to eat Sauerkraut when I was in Freiburg, Germany. Anyway, I don't like it so it didn't make much of a difference. hehehe~

11032006023
We bought two portions of sausages.
I almost forgot to take pictures of it because I was so excited to eat up the sausages. See my piece dipped into the mustard? I love it~ I like any kind of sausages, but this was nice~

The longest sausage thingie was part of the Discover Germany thingie, so they sponsored this for the longest sausage...
11032006024
Tissue paper~ diaoz...

With that, i wiped my mouth of the black red gold of Germany and left reeling from wanting more sausages.

1GB MMCMobile

I've got some good news partly related to my blogging. But before I share the good news, maybe you'd like to visit here, http://nusartsclub.org/blogfest/ to vote for me. I'll promise that my next couple of blog entries, with my this piece of good news will be solid sia... wahaha~

Remember this post which I said I wanted to buy a 512mb memory card to replace my old one for my new phone? Well, I've got myself a pretty great deal.

IMG_6831

This is like double better!!!

The father went down to Suntec City's IT fair this evening with the mother and the sister, and well, he bought that for himself, my sister and me. Before tongues start wagging about whatever whatever, I must state clearly that the memory card was bought at half price. Great deal. It's so worth it that I think I'll make a trip down to Suntec City this weekend myself to get a 1gb compact flash card for my camera. yea... The father got one of those for his camera and didn't get any for me. hehehe...

I suddenly realised that now my phone's got more than the power of a boring mp3 player and a boring camera, it's both! and more!!! It's everything except my computer packed in one small candy bar.

And the funny part about my phone, was that I tried video calling this evening with my sister. I forgot that I was on the bus when I picked up her video call. It turned out pretty bad since I didn't dare talk very loudly, in the end I started gesturing and making actions to better convey my words across. It was damn funny. And the funnier thing, the sister tried posing in front of the camera. Gross.

I'm starting to love my phone more and more~

Backup-ing

A bit of plugging before I start...
http://nusartsclub.org/blogfest/
That's the place to go and vote for me. Thanks~

Okay, back to where I want to start. I was thinking, one fine day,
What if one day something goes wrong with Blogger (touch wood), like if Google goes bankrupt or something, what would happen to my blog?

So, I decided to do a backup of all my blog entries. As of this entry, I have altogether 290 entries, so without a backup, in case of any circumstance, 290 days of my life would be liquidated, just poof, like that. I asked a friend, how can I do backups, the reply I got was to manually cut and paste each blog entry over to microsoft word. Tedious, but that's what I'm doing now. I've started yesterday, and have yet even reach the halfway mark of my archives. And I only started writing more entries and longer entries lately.

Someone commented that my font is pretty small. My sister says it's actually okay, so I don't think I'd do anything about it. Okay, even if it's too small I can't do anything about it unless I change my whole blogskin which I'm not planning to do. Another reason for my such inability other than the technical one is that if the font gets bigger, the entries would seem much much longer. And my entries are already very long in the very first place.

I ramble on too much. But this is me. I think I'm getting naggy as I age. Or maybe it's just that I've seen so much and felt so much that I really need an avenue to express myself lest I die somewhere halfway. Sometimes I post pictures too. But lately I'm too dead to do much postings.

One bad thing about doing backups is that I have to confront my past again. It like my past have been all kept sealed in this bottle and I have to go through the process of opening up the bottle and transferring them to another bottle. These past manage to evaporate out during the transfer and are floating all about me. The past and the reality never has been so stark in front of me.

I'm not a person with a happy past, but not all I wrote in the past are unhappy. Little things hidden behind words only known to me are what hurts the most. Especially my MSN space. I seem to be trying hard to forget it's existence. Yet, I don't bear to delete all those memories. Deleting those memories would be like undergoing erasure of memory sans Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I was reading my previous entry one that. When I first watched that, there was nothing in my memories that needs to be erased, but now, there are so many memories burdening me.

I need to get on with my life without being stuck in the past, but somehow I don't want myself to move forward. I don't know what I want.

My bottle is now overfilled with stuff. I'd think memories are like gas, can be compressed. So I'd be compressing my memories into my bottle, but what would happen if this is done? An increase in pressure within the bottle. If my meagre knowledge of primary school knowledge didn't fail me, in a non variable space, an increase in gas would lead to an increase in air pressure in the space, the gaseous particles would then move faster and collide with other particles more frequently.

I think that's what is happening to me. By compressing my memories, I'm creating further stress on myself and increasing my pressure. The memories will return to haunt one day.
